Abstract: In Mexican higher education, there has been a widespread speculation about the actors involved in the process and their responsability in the role they play to reach an educational goal with their students. One of these main actors is the professor. The image of “the good professor” has been constructed throughout history from a set of characteristics and atributes he must have. There are several concepts about it, all of them raised from different disciplines and theoretical perspectives, nevertheless and because of diverse approaches, we believe there is an endless list of concepts about what to be a good professor means, this list is determined by the professors themselves and is directly linked to their context, which also is important, due to the fact that their practices revolve around this conceptualization. For this reason we took on the task to find out, through a survey, professors’ opinions from two Mexican public universities: Morelos State University and Chiapas State University. These professors were asked questions such as: what does it mean to be a good professor? what are the required competences, atributes and attitudes for being a good one? Thus, we would analyze the existing correspondence between both, professors’ inner conceptions and the competent assessing bodies which guarantee for the quality of certain professors’ profiles.

Keywords: higher education, being a good professor, posgraduate quality education.
