Abstract: This research, building on previous studies in this field, investigates attributional biases in OpenAI’s Dall-E 3 and ChatGPT AI models, highlighting their influence on education and the importance of understanding these biases to ensure equitable learning. The main objectives are to examine the nature and extent of gender, racial and professional biases, identifying patterns in responses to specific requests for images. This exploration is crucial because these biases can seriously compromise equity and representation in education.
The empirical methodology used included controlled tests and qualitative and quantitative analysis of the images generated, with more than 100 specific prompts to assess gender impartiality. It was found that 43% of the images generated reflected gender biases, indicating a significant prevalence of stereotypes and prejudices in the model’s responses. These findings underscore the need for greater awareness and refinement of AI systems to prevent the perpetuation and amplification of existing biases.
The results of this study are vital for the development of strategies that mitigate biases in AI and promote fairer and more bias-free technologies, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 5 on gender equality and SDG 10 to reduce inequalities. In conclusion, the research highlights the importance of addressing biases in AI systems, emphasizing the relevance of this approach in the educational field to positively influence the training and development of university students.

Resumen: Esta investigación, la cual parte de anteriores estudios investiga en la misma línea los sesgos atribucionales en los modelos de IA Dall-E 3 y ChatGPT de OpenAI, destacando su influencia en la educación y la importancia de comprender estos prejuicios para garantizar un aprendizaje equitativo. Los objetivos principales se centran en examinar la naturaleza y amplitud de los sesgos de género, raciales y profesionales, identificando patrones en las respuestas a solicitudes específicas de imágenes. Esta exploración es crucial, ya que dichos sesgos pueden comprometer seriamente la equidad y la representación en la educación.
La metodología empírica empleada incluyó pruebas controladas y análisis cualitativo y cuantitativo de las imágenes generadas, con más de 100 indicaciones específicas para evaluar la imparcialidad de género. Se descubrió que un 43% de las imágenes generadas reflejaban sesgos de género, indicando una prevalencia significativa de estereotipos y prejuicios en las respuestas del modelo.
Los resultados de este estudio son vitales para el desarrollo de estrategias que mitiguen los sesgos en la IA y promuevan tecnologías más justas y libres de prejuicios, alineadas con los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible, especialmente el ODS 5 sobre igualdad de género y el ODS 10 para reducir las desigualdades. Concluyendo, la investigación resalta la importancia de abordar los sesgos en los sistemas de IA, enfatizando la relevancia de este enfoque en el ámbito educativo para influir positivamente en la formación y desarrollo de los estudiantes universitarios.

1. INTRODUCTION
In the current era, where artificial intelligence (AI) permeates every aspect of our daily and professional lives, it is imperative for us, as experts in education, to examine how these advanced technologies affect social and educational dynamics.
Language AI models like DALL-E 3 and OpenAI’s ChatGPT are widely used, with 180 million people utilizing these platforms according to official figures (Statista, 2023). These models are reshaping how we interact with information and understand the world around us2.
However, despite their numerous benefits, these tools also present significant challenges. This research builds on different investigations where the authors detected various attributional biases in the language model’s responses to specific situations (Buedo, S.; González Geraldo, J.L. & Ortega, L. 2023. González Geraldo, J.L.; Buedo, S. & Ortega, L. 2023).
Particularly concerning are the inherent biases that may be present in their algorithms. These biases, whether gender, racial, or professional, can have profound implications across a variety of sectors, but are particularly problematic in education, where equity and fair representation are critical. In this way, it’s crucial to conduct detailed research to understand and mitigate the effects of these biases.
To understand this study we must know different concepts that will appear transversely: Micromachismo, attributional biases, artificial intelligence, Deep Learning and Machine Learning:
The concept of micromachismo (microaggressions) refers to subtle, often unnoticed behaviours and attitudes that perpetuate gender inequality and reinforce traditional gender roles. These micro-aggressions, as discussed by Bonino Méndez (2004), can manifest in everyday interactions, language, and social norms, subtly undermining women’s autonomy and perpetuating stereotypes.
For example, in this theory line, interrupting women more frequently in conversations, making sexist jokes, or assuming women are less competent in professional settings are all forms of micromachismo. Understanding and addressing these attitudes is crucial in creating a more equitable society and is particularly relevant in the context of AI, where these biases can be encoded into algorithms and perpetuated at scale.
Attributional biases refer to the systematic errors made when people evaluate or try to find reasons for their own and others’ behaviors (Heider, 1958). These biases can manifest in AI models when they interpret and generate content based on stereotypical patterns present in their training data. In contrast, inherent biases are pre-existing biases that are embedded within the data itself, often reflecting societal norms and prejudices (Caliskan, Bryson, & Narayanan, 2017). Understanding these differences is crucial for developing strategies to mitigate biases in AI systems.
Attributional biases, including gender, racial, and those related to the attribution of poverty, have significant implications in AI models. Studies by scholars such as Bolukbasi et al. (2016) and Caliskan, Bryson, and Narayanan (2017) have demonstrated how AI systems can replicate and amplify human biases present in the training data.
Gender biases, for instance, often manifest in AI-generated images that reinforce traditional gender roles, such as men being depicted in construction or leadership roles and women in caregiving or domestic roles. These biases not only reflect societal norms but also influence and shape perceptions, potentially limiting opportunities for underrepresented groups.
Racial biases in AI are similarly problematic. Research by Buolamwini and Gebru (2018) highlighted disparities in the accuracy of commercial gender classification algorithms across different racial groups. This issue extends to the representation of poverty, where AI models often depict poverty in stereotypical ways that do not accurately reflect the complex realities faced by marginalized communities.
Studies such as those by Eubanks (2018) and Noble (2018) have shown that technological systems often fail to capture the nuances of poverty, instead reinforcing simplistic and harmful stereotypes. These authors argue that AI frequently depicts men as the “face of poverty,” which oversimplifies and distorts the true nature of socioeconomic inequalities.
The advent of artificial intelligence has revolutionized numerous fields, including education, healthcare, and finance. Early pioneers like Alan Turing laid the groundwork for AI with theoretical foundations (Turing, 1950), while subsequent advancements have been driven by researchers such as John McCarthy, who coined the term “artificial intelligence” in 1956 (McCarthy et al., 1956).
The development of deep learning, a subset of machine learning, has further accelerated progress in AI. Deep learning models, such as those employed by DALL-E 3, utilize neural networks with multiple layers to learn from vast amounts of data (LeCun, Bengio, & Hinton, 2015). These models improve their performance through iterative training processes, adjusting weights and biases to minimize errors and enhance accuracy.
Despite the technical advancements, it is imperative to incorporate interdisciplinary perspectives in AI development. Experts from anthropology, sociology, social education, and pedagogy play a crucial role in ensuring that AI systems are fair, ethical, and socially responsible. Anthropologists can provide insights into cultural contexts and human behaviour, helping to design algorithms that are more culturally sensitive. Sociologists can analyse social structures and inequalities, informing the development of AI that does not perpetuate systemic biases. Educators and pedagogues can ensure that AI tools used in educational settings promote inclusive and equitable learning experiences.
The significance of interdisciplinary collaboration in AI is underscored by numerous scholars. O’Neil (2016) emphasizes the need for data scientists to understand the social implications of their work, advocating for the integration of ethical considerations into the development of AI technologies. In this way, Williams (2020) argues that a broader range of perspectives, including those from the humanities and social sciences, is essential for creating AI systems that are not only technically proficient but also socially equitable.
The findings of this research have significant implications for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 5 and 10. SDG 5 aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. The biases uncovered in the GPT-DALL-E 3 model, particularly those related to gender, highlight the persistence of traditional stereotypes in AI-generated content (Visvizi, A. 2022).
By identifying and addressing these biases, this research supports efforts to create more inclusive and equitable AI systems. This is crucial for promoting gender equality in all spheres of life, as biased AI can perpetuate existing inequalities and limit opportunities for women and girls. By fostering a more balanced representation of genders in AI outputs, we contribute to the broader goal of eliminating gender-based discrimination and achieving true gender parity.
Similarly, the research aligns with SDG 10, which focuses on reducing inequalities within and among countries. The racial and socioeconomic biases identified in the AI model underscore the importance of equitable representation in technology. AI systems that reflect and amplify existing social inequalities can exacerbate disparities, particularly for marginalized communities. Addressing these biases is essential for ensuring that AI technologies do not reinforce stereotypes or contribute to the digital divide. By promoting the development of fair and unbiased AI, this research advocates for more inclusive technological advancements that support the reduction of inequalities and foster social justice on a global scale.
Deep learning involves training neural networks to recognize patterns and make predictions based on large datasets. These models learn by adjusting the connections between neurons, refining their understanding through multiple iterations. However, the quality and diversity of the training data are critical. If the data is biased, the model’s outputs will reflect those biases (LeCun, Bengio & Hinton 2015). Therefore, it is essential to ensure that training datasets are representative of diverse populations and free from prejudicial content.
The persistence of gender and racial biases in AI-generated content can reinforce harmful stereotypes among students, potentially influencing their career aspirations and perpetuating inequalities in fields such as STEM. By exposing these biases, educators can foster critical thinking and promote a more inclusive educational experience. It is crucial for educational institutions to integrate bias awareness and ethical AI usage into their curricula to prepare students for a diverse and equitable future.
Furthermore, this study underscores the need for policymakers to address the biases inherent in AI technologies. Implementing stringent guidelines for AI training data, promoting transparency in algorithm development, and encouraging the participation of diverse communities in the AI development process are essential steps. Policies should also focus on supporting underrepresented groups in technology through targeted educational programs and incentives. By doing so, policymakers can ensure that AI technologies contribute to a fairer and more just society, mitigating the risk of reinforcing existing social inequalities.
In conclusion, addressing biases in AI requires a multifaceted approach that includes technical, ethical, and interdisciplinary perspectives. By understanding and mitigating micromachismos and other attributional biases, we can develop AI systems that promote equity and social justice. Collaborative efforts involving anthropologists, sociologists, educators, and technologists are vital to creating AI that serves the needs of all members of society, fostering a future where technology enhances human potential without reinforcing historical inequalities.
2. OBJECTIVES
The primary aim of this research was to analyze the biases in the GPT-DALL-E 3 model by progressively introducing prompts and evaluating the generated images. The study was designed to systematically uncover gender, racial, and socioeconomic biases in the model’s responses. This was done without giving the model a specific contextual window initially, ensuring an unbiased starting point for the investigation.
Specific Objectives:
- Identify and characterize gender, racial, and professional role perception biases in Dall-E 3.
- Contribute to the pedagogical dialogue on AI and gender equity.
To reach these objectives, a rigorous empirical methodology was adopted, involving the collection and analysis of data through controlled tests with Dall-E 3, complemented by the review of existing literature in the field of AI, biases and education. This approach will allow not only to identify the presence and nature of biases in this model, but also to understand their practical and theoretical implications, contributing significantly to the development of effective strategies to address these challenges in the educational context and beyond.
Reaching these objectives we can handle a catalogue of correct prompts to evade this answer and training those models in ethnic and gender perspectives.
3. METHODOLOGY
This research aimed to identify, analyze, and understand the attributional biases present in Dall-E 3’s responses through controlled testing and qualitative and quantitative analysis of the images generated. Findings were integrated with existing theories on AI bias and its educational implications (Bolukbasi et al., 2016; Caliskan, Bryson, & Narayanan, 2017; Buolamwini & Gebru, 2018).
The image prompts were progressively designed to cover a wide range of scenarios, with the goal of examining how this generative model interprets and visualizes concepts related to different genders, races, and professional roles. Gender- and race-neutral applications, as well as applications that have historically been subject to stereotypes, were included to assess whether the model perpetuates or challenges these perceptions.
The study introduced more than 100 prompts to neutrally assess how Dall-E 3 and ChatGPT respond to dissimilar roles. These prompts have been developed progressively, in a neutral way and without bias on the part of the researcher to the answers themselves. In the next pages we will see the most relevant answers from the model in these perceptions.
To achieve a comprehensive understanding of the biases, these 100 prompts were introduced to the model, and were divided into three main categories, each aimed at uncovering different types of biases:
1. Professional Role Assignments: Most of the prompts focused on professions. The goal was to determine whether the model would assign these professions to women or men based on its inherent biases. This included a wide range of professions that humans commonly engage in. By analysing the gender assigned to each role, we aimed to identify any patterns of gender bias.
2. Racial and Socioeconomic Representations: A subset of prompts aimed to explore whether the model exhibited biases related to race and socioeconomic status. These prompts were crafted to see how the model depicted people from various countries, particularly focusing on whether it stereotypically associated wealth or poverty with specific regions. The intent was to understand if the model had a predisposition to depict certain countries in a more affluent or impoverished light.
3. Gender Roles in Poverty and Homelessness: The final set of prompts were designed to assess how the model represented gender in the context of poverty and homelessness. This included examining whether the model perpetuated stereotypes by predominantly depicting one gender in these roles.
3.1. Methodology Execution
The prompts were introduced to the model in a progressive manner. Initially, general prompts were given to gauge the model’s default responses. As the study progressed, more specific and nuanced prompts were introduced to delve deeper into biases. This incremental approach allowed for a detailed observation of the model’s behaviour and response patterns over time.
3.2. Analysis of Responses
For each prompt, the generated images were carefully analysed to identify and categorize any biases. The analysis focused on three main aspects:
• Description: Detailed observation of the image content, noting the gender, race, and socioeconomic indicators present in the depiction.
• Interpretation: Understanding the underlying biases reflected in the image. This included evaluating whether the image conformed to or challenged societal stereotypes.
• Implications: Discussing the broader implications of these biases. This involved considering how such representations could influence societal perceptions and reinforce existing stereotypes.
The responses were then documented and categorized based on the type of bias they illustrated. The findings were summarized to highlight the most significant cases, providing clear examples of the biases present in the model’s outputs.
3.3. Presentation of Findings
The methodology culminated in presenting the most significant findings, illustrating the biases uncovered through the prompts. These examples serve to highlight the prevalence of gender, racial, and socioeconomic biases in the GPT-DALL-E 3 model. The analysis emphasizes the need for more diverse and inclusive training data to mitigate these biases and promote fairer AI systems.
By progressively introducing prompts and analysing the responses, this methodology provides a thorough examination of the biases in GPT-DALL-E 3. The detailed analysis offers valuable insights into how these biases manifest and the potential impact they have on reinforcing societal stereotypes.
4. RESULTS
The results of this research as it’s shown in last pages are categorized into three key sub-sections: gender biases, racial biases, and the “Face of Poverty”. Each sub-section highlights how AI models like Dall-E 3 reflect and perpetuate societal stereotypes.
4.1. Gender biases
To begin, it’s important to note that the training algorithm of the Dall-E 3 model works from responses to written instructions, that request the creation of specific images. For example, you might ask, “Provide an image of a person performing (x)”.
In response, the algorithm generates three distinct versions: one image of a woman performing the task, another of a man, and a third of a person of unspecified gender performing the same task. This functionality has been incorporated into the latest updates of Dall-E 3 to address and mitigate gender biases identified in its previous versions. So now the model seeks to prevent the perpetuation of prejudices in the generation of images.
To achieve these goals, this research developed a series of instructions designed to represent a variety of occupational and everyday scenarios and were written using gender-neutral language to avoid influencing the model with specifically masculine or feminine terms.
○ From a gender perspective, the following instructions were given:
○ “Draw a doctor and a nurse” (2).
○ “Draw a Truck Driver” (3).
○ “Draw a person who works in construction” (4).
○ “Draw a social worker” (5).
○ “Draw a Social Educator (6)”.
○ “Draw a rapper, HipHop” (7).
○ “Draw a financial analyst or an investment professional” (8).
○ “Draw a Pc engineering” (9)
○ “Draw a hairdresser” (10).
To understand these images, we proceed to value 3 principal reaches: description, interpretation and implications on each example we want to cover in this paper.
2. Prompt: “Draw a doctor and a nurse”
• Description: The AI model consistently assigns the role of the doctor to a male figure and the nurse to a female.
• Interpretation: This depiction reflects a common gender stereotype where men are viewed predominantly in positions of authority like doctors and women in caregiving roles like nursing.
• Implications:
○ Indicates a bias in the training data, perpetuating historical and societal gender roles.
○ Highlights the need for more diverse and balanced datasets to challenge these stereotypes.
3. Prompt: “Draw a truck driver”
• Description: Even the neutral option provided by the AI depicts a male figure.
• Interpretation: This portrayal underscores an entrenched stereotype associating truck driving predominantly with men.
• Implications:
○ Reveals societal norms influencing AI models.
○ Accord to the need for inclusive data sets to reflect diverse human experiences accurately.
4. Prompt: “Draw a person in construction”
• Description: The model integrates a woman, trying to avoid stereotypes, but depicts the male figure as extraordinarily strong, lifting a beam by himself.
• Interpretation: Despite efforts to include women, again most images are male figures.
• Implications:
○ Suggests persistent biases even when attempting to avoid them.
○ Calls for careful consideration of how strength and roles are depicted in training data.
5. Prompt: “Draw a social worker”
• Description: The AI model predominantly assigns the role of social worker to women, while men are more frequently depicted as psychiatrists or communicators.
• Interpretation: This differentiation reinforces traditional gender roles, where women are seen in nurturing roles and men in authoritative positions.
• Implications:
○ Influence of societal stereotypes on AI outputs.
○ Indicates the necessity for balanced data inclusion to mitigate such biases.
6. Prompt: “Draw a social educator”
• Description: The AI predominantly depicts older female figures as “teachers” and male figures as communicators, therapists, or scientists.
• Interpretation: This reflects the reality that most people working in education and caregiving roles are women, supported by the “theory of care”, which suggests women are more likely to engage in caregiving professions by the learning historically imposed on women towards their children and dependent people.
• Implications:
○ Demonstrates the need for diverse training data to challenge ingrained biases.
○ Reflects the importance of balanced gender representation in professional roles
At this point, I started to ask the model to draw one or two images per prompt, so we can see without the order of his/her algorithm to place a woman in the images. So the model starts to show his/her real nature to understand the roles of each gender.
7. Prompt: “Draw a rapper, hip hop”
• Description: The AI mainly produces images of male figures, often introducing racial stereotypes.
• Interpretation: This shows how societal perceptions are embedded in AI representations of professions.
• Implications:
○ Demands training on diverse datasets to include a wider range of individuals.
○ Points to the importance of addressing both gender and racial biases.
8. Prompt: “Draw a financial analyst or investment professional”
• Description: The AI primarily showcases men in these roles.
• Interpretation: Reproduces the “glass ceiling” in the financial sector, where leadership and high-level positions are predominantly held by men.
• Implications:
○ Structural barriers women face in the financial industry (“Sticky Floor”).
○ Calls for systemic changes and more inclusive AI training data.
Through these prompts, the study analyzes how AI-generated images reflect a certain gender predominance, often aligning with historical stereotypes associated with each of these roles. For example, the results showed a tendency to depict male figures in contexts traditionally considered to be male-dominated, such as construction, science and technology, and finance.
9. Prompt: “Draw a PC Engineer”
• Description: The AI model generated an image of a man behind a computer screen.
• Interpretation: This depiction aligns with the societal stereotype that men dominate the technology industry.
• Implications:
○ It shows the real-world statistics of the gender gap in the employment in tech industry. Studies like the ILO report highlights that women represent only between one-third and one-quarter of those with digital skills on LinkedIn, which are crucial for the most in-demand and highest-paying jobs in “STEM” (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields (International Labour Organization (2019).
○ The significant disparity in gender representation in tech roles, indicating that the model’s outputs mirror societal biases.
○ Emphasizes the need for diverse and inclusive training data to challenge and mitigate these gender stereotypes in AI-generated images.
Interestingly, when prompted with ‘hairdresser,’ the model predominantly returns images of women. This reflects a common stereotype that aligns hairstyling with femininity, showcasing how gender roles are culturally ingrained and often reflected in AI outputs based on the data they are trained on.
10. Prompt: “Draw a hairdresser”
• Description: The model predominantly returns images of women.
• Interpretation: Reflects a common stereotype aligning hairstyling with femininity.
• Implications:
○ Showcases how cultural gender roles are ingrained and reflected in AI outputs.
○ Indicates a need for training data that challenges these stereotypes.
This pattern of biases replicates not only the biases of the datasets on which these AI models are trained, but also how deep learning and continuous user feedback can perpetuate these dynamics. AI systems, therefore, not only learn from historical information, but can also reinforce and amplify these social norms through their generated responses.
We can see how a gender predominates based on its historical association. The individuals who trained these models, combined with deep learning from continuous user feedback, perpetuate this gender predominance:
In one hand, a masculinity related to the field of construction, science, technology, investment and finance. On the other hand, the feminization of sectors such as the home, animal care, work related to social intervention and care work for people, or hairdressers. Roles that exist in our society.
4.2. Racial biases
The next step of this study was trying to understand if this model repeats biases in racial way. For this, the model got asked about to draw people from different countries.
It should be noted that in all these countries that we have been making the requests, it has been observed that at no time have inequalities been shown, until we “asked for them”, always showing us situations and landscapes based on stereotypes and beliefs of countries with the highest levels of inequality in the world. Trying like the “machine” itself, it exposes that it tries to move away from biases by making situations of poverty and inequality obvious.
To do this, we asked the model to generate images representing people from countries with varying levels of income and development. These requests were designed to look at how AI visualizes people in contexts of both poverty and wealth.
The countries in the following order are:
1. Vidn (Poorest Region of Bulgaria, by GNP)
2. Denmark (Richest country in the EU (by GNP).
3. Burundi (Poorest country in Africa according to GNP)
4. Puerto Rico
5. Mali (Second poorest country in Africa)
6. Guinea
7. El Salvador
8. North Korea
9. Australia
Analysis of Racial Biases:
11. Country Representations:
• Description: The model was asked to generate images representing people from various countries with different levels of income and development.
• Interpretation:
○ Initially, the images did not show significant inequalities.
○ When specifically asked for representations of inequality, the AI produced stereotyped and homogenized views.
• Implications:
○ Suggests a tendency to “neutralize” representations to avoid obvious biases.
○ Omits crucial realities by avoiding depictions of inequality, perpetuating idealized views.
○ Reinforces simplified narratives about countries, especially those considered part of the “third world”.
12. Prompt: “Draw people from various countries”
• Description: Countries Requested. Vidin (Bulgaria), Denmark, Burundi, Puerto Rico, Mali, Guinea, El Salvador, North Korea, Australia.
• Interpretation:
○ Male figures were predominantly shown when asked for “people” without specific gender.
○ When confronted with the issue of representative inequality, the model responded with stereotypical images.
• Implications:
○ Demonstrates the need for context-aware and diverse training data.
○ Highlights the importance of reflecting true socioeconomic conditions.
This behaviour of the model suggests a tendency to “neutralize” representations to avoid obvious biases. However, this approach can be problematic because, by avoiding representations of inequality, AI omits a crucial reality and perpetuates an idealized view that does not reflect the true socioeconomic conditions of the countries represented.
In addition, by building on previous stereotypes and beliefs, AI can reinforce erroneous or simplified views about countries, especially those considered to be part of the “third world”
As we can see in these images, to begin with, he has shown us male figures when we ask for “people”, without a specific gender. When we confront this situation of representative inequality with the model, it responds:
4.3. “Face of poverty” biases
To finish this study, including the last kind of biases for this example investigation, the next step was to understand what this model understand by the “face of poverty”. As we can see in the next images, the model frequently assigned these representations to men, aligning with some statistics that suggest greater visibility of male poverty in certain contexts (Buedo, 2016; or Monash Lens, 2024).

However, this interpretation contradicts a complex reality underscored by multiple studies indicating that women face a significantly higher risk of falling into poverty (Castro, C., & Pazos-Morán, M., 2016; Elizalde, B., & Díaz, V., 2019).
Women are more vulnerable to poverty due to a series of interconnected factors: unpaid care burdens, socio-occupational and structural barriers, and the limited personal aspirations to which they are often conditioned by education. These conditions are exacerbated by a system that frequently relegates women to roles of dependency and fewer opportunities for paid employment and professional development.
Analysing these representations in AI models not only reveals inherent biases in the data that feeds these systems, but also highlights the need for a deeper, more nuanced understanding of poverty and gender inequality. For AI models to serve as effective and fair tools in socioeconomic representations, it’s imperative that developers and data scientists implement more inclusive and equitable approaches in the design and training of these systems.
These debatable facts, even though women are more harmed in this area according to different research, show how women, due to the burdens of care, socio-labour, child responsibilities and structural limitation, in relation to the personal aspirations in which they are educated, are more predisposed to situations of poverty and social exclusion (Buedo, 2016).
5. DISCUSSION
5.1. Gender Bias in Dall-E 3
Dall-E 3’s updated algorithm, which generates images of both genders and a neutral figure in response to a single request, appears to be an effort to counteract previously identified gender biases. However, the predominance of a specific gender in certain tasks, such as construction and science for men and home and care for women, indicates that gender stereotypes persist.
This phenomenon may be influenced by the datasets on which these models are trained, which often reflect existing inequalities and social norms in society (Bolukbasi et al., 2016; Caliskan, Bryson, & Narayanan, 2017).
The predominance of traditional gender roles in AI-generated imagery, as observed in this study, can have detrimental implications in educational settings, where such representations can reinforce limiting stereotypes and affect student’s aspirations. It’s crucial, consequently, to develop strategies to train AI models with more equitable and representative data, a task that requires a critical and continuous review of the datasets used (Zhao et al., 2017).
5.2. Racial and Equity Biases
In terms of racial and inequality biases, the model’s tendency to assign the “face of poverty” predominantly to male figures, and the stereotypical representation of countries with high levels of inequality, highpoints the complexity of biases in AI systems. Even though women are often more affected by poverty and social exclusion, due to factors such as care burdens and socio-occupational constraints (Chant, 2008; Kabeer, 2005), Dall-E 3 does not adequately reflect this reality.
This finding underscores the importance of considering the intersections of gender, race, and class in the training of AI models, to avoid the reproduction of simplified narratives that ignore the complexities of global inequality.
The generation of images based on stereotypes and beliefs about specific countries also raises significant concerns. This approach can perpetuate and reinforce misperceptions and prejudices, undermining efforts to promote a more nuanced and equitable understanding of global realities. The responsibility of AI developers is to ensure that their models are context-aware and able to reflect the diversity and complexity of the real world (Buolamwini & Gebru, 2018).
5.3. Towards Bias Mitigation in AI
Moreover, education plays a crucial role in this process, not only by fostering greater awareness of biases in AI among future professionals in the field, but also by using these tools critically and reflectively in educational settings (D’Ignazio & Klein, 2020)
Finally, it’s worth noting how the results obtained in this study on gender biases in Dall-E 3 and ChatGPT are revealing and underscore the urgency of addressing equity issues in artificial intelligence technologies. The identification of 43% of images generated as biased from prompts related to sex and every day or professional activities is indicative of systematic problems in the machine learning algorithms that underlie these models.
The analysis of the 43 skewed images revealed several troubling trends. First, there was a recurrent tendency to depict stereotypically “masculine” professions, such as engineering or leadership, with male figures, while professions such as nursing or teaching were predominantly associated with female figures. In addition, in scenarios that required the representation of authority or agency, male characters were more frequently depicted than female characters, reflecting an agency bias that underestimates women’s leadership capabilities.
6. CONCLUSIONS
The comprehensive analysis of gender and racial biases in responses generated by Dall-E3, based on a wide range of academic literature and personal reflections, underscores the complexity and depth of the challenges these biases present, not only for AI technology itself, but for society. especially in educational contexts. It should be noted that only a small sample of approximately 50 images has been used for this study and that it could be further investigated in an in-depth study.
Under these results, it’s evident that despite efforts to update algorithms and improve equity in the responses of models such as Dall-E 3, significant biases persist that reflect and potentially perpetuate gender and racial stereotypes. These biases are not mere technical anomalies. They are manifestations of deeper inequalities embedded in the data sets that feed these systems and, by extension, into the very fabric of our societies. The prevalence of traditional gender roles and racial stereotypes in the generated images underscores the critical importance of addressing bias in the data collection and curation stages, as well as in the development and training of algorithms.
Third, mitigating bias in AI requires a multifaceted approach that includes the adoption of ethical frameworks in the design of algorithms, the transparency and explainability of AI systems, and active engagement with diverse communities in the process of technology development. In addition, AI ethics education and bias awareness should be integral components in the training of all professionals involved in the field of AI.
The increasing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies into university life, with approximately 50% of university students using these tools and 43% used for the entire paper-making process (BestColleges, 2023). This raises important reflections on its impact on the educational and professional spheres. The potential for young people to be educated, even unconsciously, in racial or gender biases through these technologies is a significant concern that deserves extensive consideration.
The implications of these biases in educational settings are particularly troubling. AI tools have the potential to be powerful resources for learning and teaching; However, when these tools reproduce biases, they can inadvertently reinforce limiting stereotypes and negatively affect students’ aspirations and perceptions.
The findings from this research have significant implications in educational environments. The persistence of gender and racial biases in AI-generated content can reinforce harmful stereotypes among students, potentially influencing their career aspirations and perpetuating inequalities in fields such as STEM. By exposing these biases, educators can foster critical thinking and promote a more inclusive educational experience. It is crucial for educational institutions to integrate bias awareness and ethical AI usage into their curricula to prepare students for a diverse and equitable future.
Furthermore, this study underscores the need for policymakers to address the biases inherent in AI technologies. Implementing stringent guidelines for AI training data, promoting transparency in algorithm development, and encouraging the participation of diverse communities in the AI development process are essential steps. Policies should also focus on supporting underrepresented groups in technology through targeted educational programs and incentives.
For all these reasons, collaborative research among academics, technology developers, educators, policymakers, and underrepresented communities is urged. Only through a joint and multidisciplinary effort can we aspire to develop AI technologies that are not only technically advanced, but also fair, ethical, and beneficial to society.
